It’s easy to see why Carla’s having the success that she’s having. Carla’s articulate, focused, asks questions. builds relationships (Well, duh, she’s in social media), and is not married to a method so that she makes adjustments. Her method for getting passed the gatekeeper is critical and gets high marks. Her story about cold calling reminded me of my very first job with a MAJOR, MAJOR insurance company fresh out of college. I received 5 days of training to pass the licensing exam. Once passed, I was handed a rate book, a few brochures, some applications, pointed in the direction of the door, told not to let the door hit my butt on the way out, and to return on Friday with paid apps in hand. I, too, stayed a few years before starting out on my own. I swore that I would never be captured agent of any single company again and didn’t. I sold my practice and started a new career. It’s personal examples like this that re-fuels my engine and re-charges the brain.
Very useful info on getting new clients….persistence and trial marketing techniques are the best words I would use to describe Karla’s approach to marketing…thanks for the great lesson…:-)
that was a great video with awesome insights and cannot wait till part 2.. also cannot wait to see this new tool that was mentioned.. anything to make life easier..
Joe, Is this a lead into the software that Costas Peppas has been marketing lately? I’ve seen a demo of the software and it does have some unique features.
Nicely done! Good basic ideas – preparing ahead, generating leads before hitting the ground, and a good offer – not everything has to be push-button!!
Great interview! I am definitely looking forward to the next video, but like some other commenters have mentioned: devise a plan, weed out the businesses that are not a fit for your business, and create that relationship with the ones that are a fit. And just work that plan. Great stuff.
She was persistent in building her business and focused while exploring numerous different methods to see what brought the best results. Now that she has a system, it will work anywhere she goes. Great interview! I’m looking forward to Part 2!
Thanks for the interview Joe and Karla. A few takeaways for me: don’t overcomplicate things and don’t worry about the ones who don’t respond…just focus on the ones who are interested in talking to you.
Looking forward to the next video.
This is a great interview. Thanks to Karla for sharing and you Joe for bringing it to us.
Plenty of gold nuggets in here. I love the evaluation process and how Karla used a small group to build from. It’s great to have 1,000’s of leads but since most of us are focused on the client experience, that’s just too many to deal with. Sure, automation has it’s place. But I believe it’s the personal touch that Karla used that got the high open rates and 25% buy rate. Even at the low price point that an extra $1500 in the bank each month. Not bad for a “working vacation.”
Looking forward to part two!
Karla’s big secret sauce in her success is “consistent persistence”. Even though she felt like she was spinning her wheels in the beginning, she kept at it and fine tuned her approach for her style resulting in a big pay-off. Great interview Joe and congrats to Karla and her accomplishments.
Great insight into keeping things simple and following through on that simple plan. Excellent stuff Thank you Joe and in particular Karla
Great work Karla! Those are some great old school grind it out techniques in there that can apply to any local business owner or sales rep. LOVE that you have a cold calling background most people fear the rejection so much they never get off the bench and into the game. 2 key aspects to take away are: 1 pick your clients that fit your system, 2 pick an area of execution to get in the door and who knows what other service you can offer them in the future to increase your margins now that you have established the trust factor.
Good stuff. Looking for the same kinds of success this next year (preferably next month!).
You have to put in the hard work to see any results or success. When you do you “stumble upon” what works and appreciate it more. “Luck is when preparation meets opportunity”
Good for you for taking that leap. You are inspiring to many. I agree that everyone hates cold calling, but we need to do it. Good for trying to think out of the box to get new leads. Some good points here. Thanks
Man! So simple, yet such a kick in the butt. Why do “we” (and clearly, I mean “I”) overcomplicate crap?! Thanks for the hammer to the face and the kick in the arse. Inspiring and motivating, although humbling. 🙂 Great interview Joe!
Thanks so much for going through the steps Karla, it’s really inspiring! I’m going to go through this a few times, it’s really going to help me to put some more life back into the business. Thanks Joe!
Fantastic discussion and interview. Inspiring to say the least. Me and my partner are doing just as you described Karla and have left our agency just recently. Trials and tribulations as you discussed. We just landed our first contract with a local catering company. WhooHoo! based on Joe’s FITD method to do some local SEO work with a new website. I love how you qualify your clients. Time to put this into action and become a case study for you based on your methods. Thanks again Joe and Karla! You Rock.
Hey Joe & Karla, great interview and thanks for the insightful tips, tricks and systems that you shared with us. Really kind of floored me the way Karla’s and my “Escape” will call it, from corporate America is so parallel. I built up Seomavericks exactly the same way Karla has built her agency and she’s absolutely right….Sometimes you just have to take a leap of faith and go for it! But do me a favor guys…I know Joe is in Palm Beach as I’m an ACT owner/customer but you guys are dipping a little to close into my back yard now…Boca Raton….Spread out people….There’s only enough room in this hen house for one Rooster….LOL I’m just messing with ya….All the very best and thanks again for the lead gen intel…really cool ideas. Interesting interview. While I don’t primarily offer social media services, I can see some aspects that could apply to prospecting for other services. She impressed me with her determination. And you’re right, that was a pretty impressive engagement and close rate. One of the takeaway lessons may be to use a bubbly female to prospect for you.
Hey Joe & Karla, great interview and thanks for the insightful tips, tricks and systems that you shared with us. Really resignated with me the way Karla’s and my “Escape” we’ll call it, from Corporate America is so parallel. Cool stuff! Very inspiring to go out and take action, even with a simple strategy! My only question is what exact service do you provide that is considered to be “over delivering” on the value side for the fee being charged?
Loved it. Thanks Joe for sharing. I picked some valuable tips that im going to implement NOW.
You got it Faruk! Great to see you in the comments
Great video, with some real golden nuggets!Targeting your market with a compelling offer is key. There’s so much opportunity out there!I see so many companies using incredibly outmoded sales practices…in fact most companies….including all these so called tech startups…it’s baffling really…but they simply do not understand there’s better & more effective ways to identify, qualify & convert.Love Karla’s approach to generating some business in areas she wants to spend some quality time….that has certainly given me some new ideas! Thanks,Ron Carmichael
thanks karla keep it up, you are an inspiration, and thanks Joe Troyer for Bringing content that rocks. You material is pure gold.
My pleasure Andrew! Love bringing you guys the best of the best!
Going after clients who have a budget to spend on marketing reduces your time spent on client acquisition by reducing your number of targeted clients and making them more valuable clients.
Wow Karla brings sooo much energy to this interview it is amazing. The gift idea when prospecting is definitely unique which I’ll definitely implement into my business when I prospect myself. And the other important tips I got from the interview is taking action and the follow up. Great interview Joe.

Well to be fair if you have a frame of reference for this business via your husband success is a matter of time. Add to the fact that digital marketing is just becoming part of the conversation for small business. If you had insight from a prior medium that advertisers were convinced work then I don’t see why it would so hard to convince them to use your services while prospecting.
While her principle for success are sound for prospecting I need an interview from someone who implemented these principles and did not have as much of a cushion and hands on mentoring implementing the process of renting lead generation site to a small business.
This interview has answered the problem I now face. Getting paying clients and now I agree that I need a system in place to feed a constant stream of prospects to my business. Karla’s process is simple but very effective, if you are not a “salesperson” (most of us my have this problem) but can follow a proven technique then you can automate it. In this business you need a team and most of us are trying to do it all alone. A system like her’s allows you to focus on fulfillment, fulfillment is what Joe has taught us, how to get ranked, how to build our sites, I struggled with campaign and now know that campaign and getting paying clients can be complexed or just plain simple depending on you finding what works for you (it can also work for others) thanks Karla, thanks Joe, what an eye opener.
She also stressing a vital point that I am seeing in my business and that is to focus on a niche and dig wide. While her background and connection to her husband gave her a competitive advantage in local marketing I cannot deny that she put in 100% effort to achieve her success. Her insights on creating a funnel to attract business is dead on. I wonder how you are implementing the prospect funnel joe and do you have any examples.
LOVE this, Joe and Karla! First of all, Joe, these interviews are FANTASTIC, keep them coming! Next, kudos to Karla for daring to take action on her dream, and then applying herself to make it happen. Every challenge that pops in our way is another opportunity to find a creative way to either overcome it, or remove it from the process. There is ALWAYS a way. Find that way. Thanks for sharing and inspiring us! : )
The Dude Abides and I Concur!! That ..it almost never happens. The content was both informative and inspirational. As The Evangelist for the Movement to Cooperation I am impressed. This rarely happens also. I was recently nominated to be a Ted Speaker cause Cooperation is in, competing heading to the well deserved woodchipper. Very grateful you two shared openly and honestly about what worked. Teaching in past tense is always cool. If I make it to the Ted Stage will most certainly sing your praises as Entrepreneurs who GET it. If not I will just silently repeat it to myself 17 million times so I won’t forget!!! Many thanks for showing GIVING is where it is at!!! Cordially, Scott Powell The Evangelist for the Movement to Cooperation
This interview is an awesome inspiration. It has helped to reinforce with me my need to simply get out there and get started. It wasn’t until near the end of the interview that I realized that Karla is Costas Peppas wife. How awesome that is. Thanks again to both you Joe and Karla for taking your time to record this and share it. Keep it coming!
Educational, fresh and inspirational A young lady taking those initial steps and making it work! A great inspiration for any young lady, looking for a role model in a male dominated industry.
Great work Karla and thanks for explaining your experiences with us. And also thanks to Joe for bringing us fantastic content all the time.
Karla’s process highlights the need for simplicity and efficiency in our businesses. Heck finding prospects today is so easy. But prospects don’t pay the bills and just waste your time if they don’t convert. Finding relevant contacts is what Karla has done and doesn’t waste her time on those that show little or no interest – DON’T WASTE TIME. But she also picked a niche that she had knowledge of which would certainly give her extra authority with any prospect she spoke to – KNOW YOUR NICHE. To those that showed interest in her first contact, she made them a hard to refuse offer – GIVE THE PROSPECT SOMETHING THAT WILL SHOW WHAT YOU CAN DO FOR THEM. She also qualified these prospects while making that offer by telling them how much it would cost after her gift – NO SURPRISES. She then proved her worth to them by fulfilling what she offered – GAIN TRUST BEFORE THE FINAL REQUEST. That all made it pretty tough for anyone to say no – SUCCESS.
Like everyone else here, I found the vid motivating and educational too. The right steps are generally not that hard to take, but figuring out what those right steps ARE is the tough part. Karla just saved many of us a lot of frustration, wasted time and money by telling us what didn’t work (maybe the most valuable info) as well as the process she found that did produce results. I’m grateful, thanks!
Looking forward to video 2!
Excellent presentation Karla and Joe! Thank you Karla for inspiring us and taking your time to share what has worked for you. Your enthusiasm for what you are doing is obvious and contagious. Congratulations on your success. Thank you Joe for always providing us with outstanding content.
A really refreshing interview of another person in our shoes that is so much easier to relate to than someone who has a very mature business. Whom amongst us hasn’t tried to be the “be all and end all to all people.” Thanks for sharing.
Congratulations on your success and thanks for a great presentation.Dale.
I normally take notes when watching paid video products, but I found myself scrambling for pen and paper 21 minutes into the interview. This is a gem!
Hey guys, I already invested in the premium version of this before seeing Joe’s recommendation. All I can say is that everything works as advertised. Costas has provided outstanding support, no question I had was too stupid, or met with one of those replies full of attitude (you know what I mean right).
I’ve made improvement suggestions and pointed out a few things that needed a quick tweak, every time Costas got back to be in a professional manner.
Unfortunately for me, I won’t get access to the bonuses that Joe is providing, but for you, it’s an investment worth your consideration, especially if you have ACT.
As a side-note, neither Joe or Carlos have put me up for this. i just love using Contact Legend and wanted to share my opinion.
Great interview Joe. I like that Karla is so lowkey on her aproach
Great information. A lot of gems here for all of us. Glad to see your success, Karla
Amazing interview, this is the kind of information that we need if we’re having issues getting underway with our client-getting efforts. Thanks to you Karla and Joe for bringing this and all the other great videos you put together for us.
